Past Tense ( भूतकाल )
अंग्रेजी भाषा में भूतकाल की क्रिया को भी ( वर्तमान की तरह ) मुख्य चार भागों में बांटा गया है:
1. Ram Studied. ( राम स्टडीड )
● राम पढ़ा ।
2. Ram was studying. ( राम वाज स्टडिंग )
● राम पढ़ रहा था ।
3. Ram had studied ( राम हैड स्टडीड )
● राम ने पढ़ लिया था।
4. Ram had been studying since morning.
( राम हैड बीन स्टडींग सिंस मॉर्निंग )
● राम सुबह से पढ़ रहा था।
■ Ram sudied- राम पढ़ा ( Past Indefinite ), इससे पता चलता है कि क्रिया बीते समय में पूरी हो गई, पर यह पता नहीं लगता कि कब हुई, Ram was studying - राम पढ़ रहा था ( Past Continuous ), इससे ज्ञात होता है कि क्रिया जारी थी, खत्म नहीं हुई थी । Ram had studied- राम ने पढ़ लिया था ( Past Perfect ), अर्थात क्रिया बहुत पहले पूरी हो गई थी; Ram had been studying since morning- राम सुबह से पढ़ रहा था ( Past Perfect Continuous ) अर्थात क्रिया एक निश्चित समय से चल रही थी ।

● Teacher: Did you get up early yesterday ?
★ उमा: जी मैडम
● Uma: Yes, madam, I did.
★ अध्यापिका: क्या तुमने डबल रोटी और मक्खन खाया
● Teacher: Did you have Bread and butter ?
★ उमा: जी हां मैडम । खाया ।
● Uma: Yes madam, I did.
★ अध्यापिका: क्या रजनी तुम्हारे पास दोपहर को आई थी ?
● Teacher: Did Rajni come to you at noon ?
★ उमा: नहीं ।
● Uma: No, she did not.
★ अध्यापिका: क्या तुमने रात को यह निबंध लिखा ?
● Teacher: Did you write this essay at night ?
★ उमा: मैंने नहीं, मेरे भाई ने लिखा ।
● Uma: No, I did not, my brother did.
★ अध्यापिका: क्या तुमने स्कूल आने से पहले अपना बिस्तर ठीक किया ?
● Teacher: Did you make your bed before coming to school ?
★ उमा: जी मैडम मैंने किया ।
● Uma: Yes madam, I did.
★ अध्यापिका: क्या तुमने कल अपना पाठ याद किया ?
●Teaher: Did you learn your lesson yesterday ?
★ उमा: नहीं, मैंने नहीं किया ।
● Uma: No, I did not.

★ Was/Were ★
★ अध्यापक: क्या तुम चलते-चलते पुस्तक नहीं पढ़ रहे थे ?
● Teacher: Were you not reading a book while walking ?
★ रमेश: जी, पढ़ रहा था ।
● Ramesh: Yes sir, I was.
★ अध्यापक: क्या रमा भी चलते-चलते पढ़ रहे थी ?
● Teacher: Was Rama also reading while walking ?
★ रमेश: नहीं, वह केवल सुन रही थी ।
● Ramesh: No, she was just listening.
★ अध्यापक: क्या तुम्हारे घर में तुम्हारी बुआ गा रही थी ?
● Teacher: Was your aunt singing at your house ?
★ रमेश: नहीं, मेरी बहन गा रही थी ।
● Ramesh: No, it was my sister.
★ राधा: क्या तुम अखबार पढ़ रही थी ?
● Radha: Were you reading the newspaper ?
★ सुधा: हां, पढ़ रही थी ।
● Sudha: Yes, I was.

★ Had ★
★ कमल: क्या तुम सिनेमा नहीं गए थे ?
● Kamal: Had you not gone to the cinema ?
★ विमल: नहीं ।
● Vimal: No, I had not.
★ राम: क्या वह दुकान बंद कर चुका था ?
● Ram: Had he closed the shop ?
★ राधा: हां, कर चुका था ।
● Radha: Yes, he had.
★ राम: क्या वह आपको कल तक नहीं मिला था ?
● Ram: Had he not met you till yesterday ?
★ श्याम: नहीं, वह कल तक मुझे नहीं मिला था ।
● Shyam: No, he had not.
★ रमन: क्या तुम कल खेलने नहीं गए थे ।
● Raman: Had you not gone to play yesterday ?
★ सुधीर: नहीं, मैं नहीं गया था ।
● Sudhir: No, I had not.
★ सचिन: क्या तुम रोहित से पहले कही मिल चुके थे ?
● Sachin: Had you met Rohit anywhere before ?
★ अनुज: हां, मैं उसे दो साल पहले शिमला में मिला था ।
● Anuj: Yes I had met him in Shimla two years ago.
★ नीरज: क्या तुम्हारे स्टेशन पहुंचने से पहले गाड़ी जा चुकी थी ?
● Neeraj: Had the train left before you reached the station ?
★ सौरभ: हां जा चुकी थी ।
● Saurabh: Yes, it had.
★ सीमा: क्या तुम्हारी मां तुम्हारे घर पहुंचने से पहले बाजार जा चुकी थी ?
● Seema: Had your mother gone to market before you reached the station ?
★ मीरा: नहीं, वे नही जा चुकी थीं ।
● Meera: No, she had not.

★ Had been ★
★ नरेश: क्या तुम कल पिछले दो घंटे से पढ़ रहे थे ?
●Naresh: Had you been studying for the last two hours ?
★ रमेश: हां, क्योंकि मैं अपना काम खत्म करके पिक्चर देखने की योजना बना रहा था ।
● Ramesh: Yes, because I had been planning to watch a film after finishing my work.
★ नरेश: पर तुम्हारे साथ राम भी क्यों पढ़ रहा था ?
●Naresh: But, why had Ram also been studying with you?
★ रमेश: क्योंकि, वह भी मेरे साथ पिक्चर के लिए जाने की जिद कर रहा था ।
●Ramesh: Because, he had also been insisting on going with me for the film.
★ नरेश: पर तुम्हारी माता जी तो कह रही थी कि तुम कुछ दोस्तों के साथ घूमने का प्रोग्राम बना रहे थे ।
● Naresh: But, your mother was saying that you had been planning to go out with some friends.
★ रमेश: हां, पहले हम ऐसा ही कुछ सोच रहे थे, पर बाद में प्रोग्राम बदल गया ।
● Ramesh: Yes, previously we had been planning something of the sort, but later we changed our program.
★ Remember ( याद रखें ) ★
अब हम Past Tense के सकारात्मक ( Affirmative ) वाक्यों से नकारात्मक ( Negative ) तथा प्रश्नात्मक ( Interrogative ) वाक्य बनाते हैं । नियम वही है की Past Tense में Did सहायक क्रिया बढ़ाई जाती है। Past Continuous Tense में was, were, तथा Past Perfect Tense में Had के बाद निषेधात्मक वाक्य में Not बढ़ जाता है । इसी प्रकार प्रश्नात्मक वाक्यों में यही सहायक क्रियाएं did, was, were, तथा had वाक्यों में सबसे पहले प्रयोग में आती हैं ।
Affirmative: I ate bread and butter.
मैंने डबलरोटी और मक्खन खाया ।
Negative: I did not eat bread and butter.
मैंने डबलरोटी और मक्खन नहीं खाया।
Interrogative: Did I eat bread and butter ?
क्या मैंने डबलरोटी और मक्खन खाया ?
Affirmative: You were reading a book.
तुम पुस्तक पढ़ रहे थे।
Negative: You were not reading a book.
तुम पुस्तक नहीं पढ़ रहे थे।
Interrogative: Were you reading a book ?
क्या तुम पुस्तक पढ़ रहे थे ?
Affirmative: You had read a book.
तुमने पुस्तक पढ़ी थी।
Negative: You had not read a book.
तुमने पुस्तक नहीं पढ़ी थी।
Interrogative: Had you read a book ?
क्या तुमने पुस्तक पढ़ी थी ?
